University of Midwifery Education and Studies Maastricht
The University of Midwifery Education and Studies Maastricht (AVMU: AVM Uuniversity) - known as the Vroedvrouwenschool (Midwifery School) from 1913 - is supported by the Stichting Hogeschool Zuyd (Zuyd University Foundation). Home to 219 students, it is housed in a spacious new building belonging to Maastricht University (UM), adjacent to the Maastricht academic hospital (azM) and the medical University Library. The academy has its own teaching outpatient clinic, where the students come into contact with pregnant and mock clients as early as their first year. This helps prepare them for the internships that come later. The AVMU works closely with the UM Faculty of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences in research and education.
The AVMU uses Problem-Based Learning (PBL) and provides a competence-oriented learning environment. This means it is characterised by a strong relationship with professional practice and an empowering education setting focusing on students' personal development.
